Requirements to Become a Firefighter in Columbus
In order to be eligible to apply, the applicant has to fulfill the following requirements:
- Should be a U.S citizen at the time of application.
- Minimum age for applying is 17½. Should be 18 years old at the time of hire
- Must have GED or a High School Diploma at the time of appointment
- Must have a valid driver’s license at the time of application. The applicant needs to obtain a valid Ohio’s driving license at the time of being hired
- Should be mentally and physical fit
- Should not have any criminal convictions
How Long Does It Take to Become a Firefighter in Columbus?
The Columbus Civil Service Commission takes the firefighter test applications every two years, in April. They can also fill out the job interest form to keep updated.
After the candidate has met all the minimum requirements, he/she can apply for the firefighting position.
The written exam will be composed of several multiple choice questions and will be based on the pass/fail format. The Firefighter Oral Assessment Mechanism (FOAM) is a video based exam that assesses the applicant’s interpersonal relation skills, problem resolution skills, and problem sensing skills. After clearing the written and oral assessments, the shortlisted candidates have to undergo a physical fitness test.
This test is based on a pass/fail format. Those who clear this exam will be placed on the Columbus Civil Service Commission Firefighter Eligibility List.
Candidates will be required to submit a personal history questionnaire, fingerprints, picture, and polygraph. The Background Officer will then conduct a thorough background check.
The Oral Interview Board will interview the candidate to assess whether he/she is suited for the job. Those who clear this stage will then be handed conditional employment letters. These individuals will then be required to undergo a rigorous medical exam including a psychological screening, cardiovascular tests, drug exam, and a vision test.
Successful candidates will be notified by letter, and will be sent to the Columbus Fire Academy. Fire recruits will be expected to complete 36 weeks of paid training. After graduating, the appointees will have to complete a 1-year probationary period.
